In his own words Darren explains why he enjoys volunteering so much Volunteering not only gives a valuable and fulfilling experience, it provides the volunteer with an invaluable journey. Throughout this journey various skills can be gained and personal goals achieved. In this article I am going to exhibit my experience of volunteering to show how rewarding and worthwhile volunteering actually is. Not only do you provide an organisation with much needed help but you, yourself gain skills that can be presented on your curriculum vitae, and applied to future jobs. My personal experience of volunteering has been delectable, educational and has increased my confidence. For the last eight months I have been volunteering in the PDSA charity shop – and I can safely say I have not looked back since. I was warmly welcomed as a member of the team, could choose my hours to suit my needs and met lots of people. There are numerous jobs to be done in the shop; some on the shop floor dealing with customers and others requiring minimum exposure to the public, through the back sorting donated and new goods, and of course there is the option of doing paperwork in the office. I primarily took on the role of shop assistant on the shop floor as I wanted to gain skills, knowledge of shop work and experience shop work first hand. However I have progressed and now know how to do most things, and am currently in training to be a key volunteer. There’s always something to do – whether it be tidying up, merchandising stock or serving customers. Having to work with people you don’t know seemed a bit daunting however the staff and other volunteers were very friendly and would endeavour to help you when ever help was needed. My main reason for volunteering at the shop was to gain a bit of experience to start my CV and this worked as I am currently in employment thanks to my placement. Although in employment I couldn’t bare leaving as I really enjoy working at the PDSA. No matter how much or how little time you have to spare – your help will always be appreciated in any voluntary placement. However it’s not all work, work, work – every month quizzes are arranged for the volunteers to take part in through the back of the shop – and these are always very well done and enjoyable! There are various placements out there to suit everyone - no matter what your age, race or background. This could be getting on the road to finding a new job, making or developing friendships, gaining a valuable experience or just helping out a charitable organisation – why wait until tomorrow, take the plunge now.
