The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) has more than 500 member groups throughout the UK. The Moray group was established in 1971 and is now based at the Cranloch Riding Centre. This is ideal as it gives the group access to indoor and outdoor facilities.
They are a small band of dedicated volunteers with 2 qualified instructors who run riding lessons for up to 70 less-abled riders. Initially riders need to have three volunteers, one to lead the horse and the others at the rider’s side. The group runs 2 sessions per week, on a Wednesday (all day) and Monday evenings.
Dr Iain McBain, the chairperson, explained the riders gained a lot from their lessons and they really develop a sense of achievement. He has seen the positive effects of horse riding amongst the participants, particularly the opportunity to learn a new skill, make new friends, become physically stronger and develop in confidence. The Moray RDA has quite a lot of volunteering opportunities from leading the horses to preparing the horses for the day. Dr McBain said that they had considerable volunteer support from the local RAF bases. In addition being linked with Volunteer Centre Moray had been useful in recruiting several volunteers in the last year. The Moray RDA is always keen to hear from new volunteers and no experience is required as full training is given. Initially new volunteers are buddied up with an experienced volunteer until they feel comfortable in their role. If you are interested in volunteering, even if it is only for one hour a week, the Moray RDA would be delighted to hear from you.
