Do you re-use, reduce and recycle? Do you have an unwanted piece of furniture that might be someone else’s dream item? Would you like to help people and businesses in Keith re-use things and reduce waste? Then Keith Community Swap Shop wants to hear from you!
REAP (Rural Environmental Action Project) working in partnership with KSRP (Keith and Strathisla Regeneration Partnership) and Keith Community Radio are co-ordinating this exciting new project in Keith over the coming months with help from Zero Waste Scotland. Ann Davidson from REAP said: “This project is all about making it cool to save waste, making it easy to reuse instead of throw away by championing good community links and good practice in Keith. We also aim to have fun along the way! John Seivwright from Keith Community Radio will be hosting a series of monthly Community Swap Shop sessions on his radio show where people can phone in to offer items for reuse and others can phone in to claim them. People will need to make their own transport arrangements, but that shouldn’t be a problem as everyone is local to the radio station. Marina Fraser from Zero Waste Scotland will also be on the show to give information on saving waste, and she will be asking people to phone in with their stories of the most innovative ways to save on waste. There’s a prize for the best story this month – you can either contact

“We’ll also be working with businesses in Keith to see if we can divert waste from landfill by putting people in touch with each other to swap materials via an e-mail bulletin. There will also be Swap Shops run in local schools, awareness raising sessions and other events. If you are interested in helping with any of the above do get in touch, as recruiting volunteers is the first step. In our research we found that a lot of people are doing great work already in Keith, so we aim to build on that and do things the Keith way. If you would like to host an event, become a volunteer, have a good waste-saving story or good ideas for promotions we want to hear from you.”
The project has been funded by INCREASE Small Grants until February 2011.
