Over the past few weeks, Volunteer Centre Moray has been busy handing out awards across Moray in recognition of some of the outstanding work being undertaken in the local voluntary sector.

Member groups were contacted and asked to nominate volunteers who they felt went that extra mile and Volunteer Centre Moray selected two finalists and one winner for each category; categories included Volunteer of the Year and Young Volunteer of the Year.

The finalists for Volunteer of the Year were James Black who volunteers regularly at Moray Art Centre despite health issues, and May Taylor who has been the driving force behind Moray Hydrotherapy Pool’s success at securing enough funds to begin building. The winner was Eddie Turnidge who was instrumental in setting up Reboot and volunteered there on a regular basis for over 10 years before finally retiring earlier this year.

The finalists for Young Volunteer of the Year were Nicolle Cordell who has successfully raised funds enabling Moray Art Centre to deliver services to young people, and Rebecca Leitch who has helped develop and run the Buckie Quines Club. The winner was Yvonne Murphy who has overcome personal difficulties and has turned her life around through her volunteering with Moray Art Centre.

Awards were also presented in partnership with Moray College recognising the volunteering undertaken by staff and students. The finalists of Staff Volunteer of the Year were Bruce Young for his work with Moray Sea Cadets, and Anthea Waite for her work with the Scouts and footie4kids. The runaway winner, however, was Valerie Weston who volunteers with the Biblical Gardens, British Red Cross, Grampian Society for the Blind and various cancer charities (the list continues and made us all feel rather exhausted just reading about all the volunteering Valerie undertakes!).

The finalists for Student Volunteer of the Year were David John Parker who volunteers with Forres Groups Action, and Katrina Paton who coaches cross country running for primary school students. The winner was Angus Farr who coaches with Forres Cricket Club and was responsible for developing the junior section there.

Volunteer Centre Moray also decided to award an Organisation of the Year award drawing from their membership and the finalists were the PDSA Elgin shop for the outstanding support they give to volunteers, especially under 16s, and the Grampian Society for the Blind Befriending Service for their amazing training and ongoing volunteer support. The winner was Moray Art Centre in recognition for the development of their new volunteering programmes over the past year, the support and training available, and their support of the voluntary sector through the hosting and organising of events.

Congratulations to everyone, both winners and nominees!
