As an ex-director of VCM, Joyce has been involved within the voluntary sector for many years. The last two years have seen Joyce become a full director for VCM and previous to that, she was VCM’s council representative as an elected Councillor in Moray.
Over the years, Joyce has supported not only the staff and volunteers in the Centre, but has supported many charities and organisations throughout her career.
Her dear four legged companion, Molly, also made many appearances to regular board meetings and therefore highlighted Joyce’s love and passion for man’s (or rather woman’s) best friend.
With this in mind, when presented with the opportunity to give something back to a local organisation for this year’s Volunteers’ Week, Joyce’s natural choice was the PDSA shop in Elgin.
PDSA is the largest veterinary charity in Britain, providing free treatment to the pets of eligible owners who cannot afford private fees. In 45 major towns and cities in Britain, PDSA provides free veterinary treatment at its own PetAid hospitals. PDSA need the retail support from their stores to fund this worthwhile and admirable service.
On Friday 5 June, Joyce joined her fellow volunteers and got straight to work helping to sort out stock in the store’s stock area; armed with a label tagger, there was no stopping her.
“I feel it was a good insight to what goes on in the shop and it’s very interesting to see the behind the scenes as well as the background of the PDSA. I have learnt a lot about volunteering from a volunteer’s perspective in the few short hours I helped out”
Everyone is different and participates in volunteer for a number of reasons. Joyce explains that she offered her help because of her love for Molly and those like her! “I would definitely recommend volunteering to others as I feel it is very worthwhile and gives people an added interest in their lives that they might not have otherwise thought about. It can also help you go on to other things!” Joyce added “I truly admire the work that the volunteers do. It is these volunteers that keep organisations going and really make a difference”
So like Joyce, why not get involved and help an organisation or a cause you truly care about - together we can help all the wee Mollys in the world.
